I organise events as well and I'm wondering if you ever charged for them. I used to do them for free but so many people signed up and didn't attend later that it was hard to put numbers to book a venue to meet. How did you solve this?

i would do free venues only. usually restaurants are free because you consume food. if that is not an option, it depends on the cost. i have seen events where people were asked to contribute something when they arrive. you can usually announce the cost of the venue and ask everyone to contribute appropriately. if you fall short then next time ask people to contribute more. or keep a running tally during the event until the venue cost is met. from my personal feeling, if it costs more than $1-2 per person the venue is too expensive. find a cheaper one.

I think many engineers in HN have an attitude of "I need this app to do X". I usually consider that a convenience, not a real need. Otherwise, they would be searching for the actual tool solving their X and wouldn't stop until finding it

Taken that my definition of "need" is pretty strict, but I don't think the world needs more tech, lately.

That's the point. The other guy can only say yes - if chatgpt solved a hard problem and improved our understanding of the universe there would be no discussion as to its capability to do so.

"No" is not a reasonable answer to the question. It's like asking an atheist "if god and Jesus and all the angels came to earth and showed themselves for all to see, would you believe in god then?" Well yes of course, I believe in all the things we can all see. The lack of evidence is the whole point.

So asking "if there was evidence would you think differently?" Is either a fundamental misunderstanding of the persons position, or just a cheap ploy to manipulate people. In Sam's case I'm thinking it was the latter. He's a clever guy, he knows he's on camera. He asked that question just to plant the idea in people's minds - not the guy he was talking to, that guy didn't even need to answer the question because as already said there's only one answer to it. But to everyone watching, Sam basically just put it out there that ChatGPT solving quantum gravity is within the realm of possibility. Which it probably isn't.

Which makes me wonder... what's the business model long-term of AI generated art places?

A growing business right now is using AI art for product images for Amazon/etc listings. There are lots of ComfyUI workflows for it, you put in a picture of the product, some photos of people, and it can spit out images of the people wearing it.

Many product images are currently done through photoshop/etc, but this is quicker and can look more realistic.

It may not accurately represent how the product will actually look when worn, but that's not the seller's primary concern.

You teeth are literally being pushed to a new position. So if you dont use the braces for the "minimum" duration, you teeth may not be in a place where they need to be for the second set of braces to start working. So your 2nd braces are going to be pushing more and that might cause damage to your teeth/gums. Think of it like trying to do splits. If you have never done them ever before and you try to do them on your first try, then you gonna break whatever you have down there. But if you keep at it then day by day you will notice progress. The braces are like that. Each one eases you into the next stage if that makes sense.

Yes! I don't know about employers or how they would perceived vibecoding but personally I find awesome to have a single place where to show all the experiments I made and I thought other people would like that as well.

You don't need to understand how neurons work in detail to be able to use them to do something. In the past, we were able to use electricity for various purposes without knowing about electrons.

But my point is: have we really reached a technological level where we can use neurons like replaceable car parts? That video seems to suggest yes, but I’m still skeptical.

My impression is that this company is offering a product that’s still beyond our technological capabilities, much like the cold‑fusion startups that pop up from time to time.
