Note, I had to click 'vouch' on your comments to be seen by others. In the last couple of days several of your comments got flagged effectively putting your account on hold. I'm not a moderator, there's a karma threshold after which any user can click 'vouch'. > These things, which we state lightly enough here, are yet of deep import and indicate a mighty change in our whole manner of existence. For the same habit regulates not our modes of action alone but our modes of thought and feeling. Men are grown mechanical in head and in heart as well as in hand. They have lost faith in individual endeavor and in natural force of any kind. Not for internal perfection but for external combinations and arrangements, for institutions, constitutions—for mechanism of one sort or other do they hope and struggle. Their whole efforts, attachments, opinions, turn on mechanism and are of a mechanical character.
Yes. Most of the work so far has been PR. There have been no actual solutions presented that can prevent more than 2 degree rise in temperatures. We are already on track for at least 2 degrees and more. There is also the fact that the oceans are great reservoirs of energy so even if we manage to reverse the trend because of the energy stored in the oceans we will have to live on a warmer planet for several decades. This is assuming we actually start reversing global warming, which there is no indication that current market driven methods can address.
The math never added up. Buying carbon offsets is mostly a PR move by corporations to show that they're doing something but to avert disaster requires restructuring the entire consumption based economy and that ain't gonna happen any time soon. We are already on track for more than 2 degrees warming: https://theconversation.com/there-arent-enough-trees-in-the-...
You've become part of a cybernetic loop that you are not in charge of. There is no such thing as a "free" service. All social media platforms subvert human drives in favor of creating consumption habits that are destroying the planet. Even by your own admission you are addicted to Twitter, which should be telling you something.
I'd like to think I am a responsible user of cybernetic loops, having some understanding of how and why they occur. I am aware that I am being tracked and sold but as I said I find the conversations on Twitter to be so interesting and useful I consider this a price well paid. HN doesn't seems to be helping the planet. I don't think you could consider me to be addicted to Twitter because I use it less than an hour a day, although I reflexively check it sometimes.
Thanks but I avoid HN discussions. I find them to be smartypants signaling with very little substance and the opaque moderation doesn't help matters since dang and anyone else can change some numbers with their root access and silence any worthwhile discussion.
