The Switch controllers are so disappointing I doubt I'll ever buy another Nintendo product. Out of 4 Joycons and 3 Pro controllers, 1 pro controller is still fully functional.

They're ok for solo gaming, but anything multiplayer or especially cooperative is impossible.

I have the same experience. If I knew, I wouldn't never bought it. And once I experienced it, everybody was like, oooh yeah, joy cons are broken, buy pro controller. I have 4 joy cons and all started to drift and thus unusable, 3-6 months after I bough them. Bought pro controller 6 months ago and so far it still works.

So bad yet so expensive. I am honestly amazed there is no drama around it, its THAT bad. People can obviously tolerate any kind of shit.

Same. I don't understand how it's still such a consistent problem for them, even years after the Switch first released. I've had better luck with 3rd party Joy Con-like controllers than the official product.

There are some games that are basically unplayable because the drift will unpredictably fuck things up. Like the new Super Mario Golf game, for example. I tried it with the old Joy Cons and the drift will randomly add curve to your shot and ruin the shot, and some of the challenges in Adventure mode in particular don't leave much room for error.

Broken Joyons? Ok, that's common..

Did you really manage to break 2 Pro controllers? If so, how and in which way is it broken?

Not really doubting you, however those are beasts and, generally, renowned as the better controllers (compared to Xbox, PS4).

I have one (Xenoblade one) and it has around 500 hours of playtime on it - feels like new...

I hardly used them for a year, then I bought a new game and invited friends to play and now the buttons take multiple presses to register and the sticks drift.

I thought this was overblown complaint until I ran into this issue. It was extremely frustrating.

But let's be honest, you don't buy Nintendo products for high quality gaming, you buy it because you always buy Zelda.

your complaint does not align with your final statement.

If controller's longevity is inherently problematic, how is it suitable for solo while not so for copperative?

If I'm playing Zelda or something, it's bearable because it's not too time sensitive and no one else is depending on me. If I'm playing Smash Bros then I just can't hit any combos and if I'm playing Overcooked then we are all letting each other down because we're running past and into each other.

ok so it's a latency issue? Your original statement indicated physical longevity issues with the controller.

No it's not latency, the controllers just don't work. The sticks drift and the buttons sometimes take multiple presses.

Are you talking about Washington University in Saint Louis?

Did not expect to hear wustl in this thread.

Yep.

Sorry, just finally went back to research this lore. Are you sure you're right? It seems he went to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire https://www.popmartian.com/popnut/mcelwaine/7th-coming/obit....

You know, you're right. I got that detail wrong. Must have been confused by the "W" and midwest.

I live in a city with 95% adult vaccination (at least one dose) and the government has just announced that they are exploring how to open schools at an indeterminate date in the future.

If we can’t just go back to normal now, then why don’t we just give up?

Adults don't go to school.

It's not that much further to vaccinate kids though, we are almost there.

In the UK schools have been open, and the new variant is rampaging through, if we hit vaccine escape it will be because of actions like this.

Once all the kids are vaccinated (and BTW even the WHO is taking a cautious approach on this given that it's unclear whether young children are at more risk from Covid or the shots), what's the plan for preventing variants from developing in the developed world? In animal reservoirs? In the large numbers of vaccinated people who still wind up hosting (usually minor and asymptomatic) infections?

If vaccine escape happens because the UK had its schools open then I find it very difficult to believe "we vaccinate everyone at once and the virus just goes away" was ever a realistic prospect in the first place.

From what I understand, there is a good chance that the pool for variants is limited, and that vaccinations (or a past infection) give decent immunity for new variants. Even for a variant with an immune escape, ie. you are not immune and might even spread it, your past exposures will make a serious case with hospitalisation unlikely. Immune escape is not a boolean attribute.

I do feel for you.

I"m Canadian, Ontario specifically.

We've done well with vaccinations, though nowhere near close to 95% and we're still in the longest lock down world wide with no real signs of things going back to normal.

But there are signs that things are getting better. Its a long time betweeen now and September, let's give it time to see how things go. As long as the trend is moving in the right direction and governments give back their emergency powers( we have an Ontario government that just granted themselves a longer stay on their power even though we're doing really well in terms of vaccinations nd case counts) then maybe be patient and let things play out.

If this is an issue for all MTF weightlifters, would it be reasonable to disqualify someone only if they had previously competed at the same level as a male?

i don’t think you need to have competed before to have a huge advantage induced by hormones that were normally biologically there. The real question is: where do we draw the line? if a female athlete injects herself with hormones that give her an unfair advantage should this be considered cheating and be grounds for disqualification?

No- but you do see a similar restriction with pro athletes not being able to play as an amateur, partially due to the experience of competing at a higher level.

This isn't that different.

pretty sure if you take any random 250lb male that plays football or something they could be the number one female lifter in the world if they identify as a female for an hour. so not sure if that disqualification would matter

I don't think that's really relevant. In no world are people without medical treatment going to be considered, and no one is going to go through that just to win a medal.

No idea about the knives, but a huge non-US innovation is a drying rack. Wash the dishes, let them dry, put them away when you have time. If I had to dry them with a rag, I think my opinion would be different.

What do you mean by "non-US innovation"? I'm in the US and use a drying rack. I can't think of anyone I know in the US who doesn't use a drying rack.

People with dishwashers. Oh, wait... there's a drying rack inside the dishwasher!

I mean I am also a person with a dishwasher....

I don't! I wash, rinse and stack items so they are exposed to the air. They begin to dry right away.

Maybe different parts of the country? I’d never seen one until I left the US.

That’s basically my life and it’s fantastic. I work 12 timezones away from my colleagues. Get real work done while they are asleep, stay up for occasional meetings, scheduled in advance. I usually take two tickets at once, so if I get stuck and need help, I can switch to the other ticket until someone who can help me is awake.

I admittedly did this a few weeks during the pandemic. Worked through the night, attended standup, and then slept and went about my day, answering Slack stuff in the late afternoon. So productive.

If your salary is high enough that you can save some money then you aren’t required to put up with bullshit in order to keep eating food.

Do you mean that by saving money people can leave the profession sooner or at least move to a school with more favorable working conditions?

If so, maybe you’ve hit on a kernel of truth: we can’t risk paying teachers enough that they’d have the financial security to leave a bad work situation.

Am I the only one who thinks “we should pay teachers more so they can afford a new profession because public education is horrible” is the wrong takeaway? Like, why not fix public education (e.g., more teacher autonomy) or at least support some voucher program so more teachers can be private school teachers?

See my reply above. I didn’t think this idea would be controversial. Working conditions should improve when the workers have other options.

"Working conditions should improve when the workers have other options."

So when the workers have not other options, working conditions can stay low?

It’s not a “should” it’s just what happens.

I mean that teachers would have a credible threat of leaving and hopefully administrations and school boards would respond to the threat by improving conditions.

High salaries means more people looking to get in, so it's not like administrators would risk running out of teachers.

(I'm all for financially rewarding good teachers, but because their work is incredibly valuable. It's just ab incredibly hard context in which to separate the good and the bad without creating perverse incentives)

I went cold turkey from Reddit recently after realizing my frequent usage was impacting my life and relationships. Was harder and easier than I expected. I kept catching myself opening it in a new tab unconsciously. I learned to stop myself before I’d read a single link, or I’d get sucked in.

Deleted my 10+ year accounts a few weeks ago.

Hardly use it now, and have been able to use it more responsibly.

The best/worst is when you've run out of ideas that make sense, so you start trying ideas that don't make sense and one of them works.

Is that different from a "hybrid" bike?

It isn't.

Gravel bike is just a new marketing term.

Gravel bikes are more sporty. They come with drop bars and geometry to complement that riding position, and will weigh much less than an upright hybrid.

You’ll also find gears to accommodate more speeds and inclines, typically a single chainring with an 11 speed lightweight derailleur vs 3 to 9 speed heavyweight (but clean and easy maintenance) hub gears.
