More than 100 airlines worldwide are using Amadeus (amadeus.com) today. There are different components to it such as Amadeus altea inventory (for managing their flight inventory, prices etc), altea reservation and altea DCS (for check-in and boarding). Additionally there are products to manage their websites (such as the e-commerce solution of Amadeus), revenue management systems etc.
The main competitors are sabre (as mentioned) but also HP, Accenture, SITA and others are providing solutions in the same field.
It's a pretty mature industry and btw one of the first ones to move to the cloud.
Beautiful as Spain and other Mediterranean countries, extremely cheap, fantastic food, nice beaches, beautiful girls ;-) and very welcoming, curious and friendly people!

In terms of suggestions: I'd be cool to see if we could make that a regular meet-up, e.g. every month.
For the first event, I'd recommend not to have any planned talks/presentation but to try it out and to see if we there'd be enough people to meet regularily.
I do have exactly the same problem/need and would add the following requirements:
1/ add history per contact: e.g. met X during event Y and talked about Z.
2/ integrate w/ my prefered mail application and other communication means (twitter/fb & co) to keep track of the interactions I had w/ the person in question.
Anybody interested in building that? I'd be more than happy to help :-)
I guess that already exists in some way or the other (e.g. social media monitoring). The interesting bit here would be to track interactions w/ a specific person throughout different social medias.
- Do a search on each big blog for "why I hate PR people" and learn from those mistakes (there is an infamous one on TechCrunch from Arrington)
- If you want to learn the basics just get a book like "PR for Dummies" to learn the 101
- In my own experience with PR you need to care about results: If that's the case unless you are willing to invest the time and have the skills there is actual value to hiring a PR pro. If you look at Apple back in the day Regis McKenna really helped to put them on the map (http://www.regis.com). When you hire a good PR person what they bring to the table is a good rolodex, not the ability to pump out press releases and the like. The rolodex and the doors that open are what you're paying for IMHO.
