It used to be financial modeling but they realized they’d get more attention with the esports audience this way.
It’s gone quite far now - one of the many challenges was a mock terrain map where you’d calculate distances to hike while considering the weight of your pack. Even the way they walk through the tunnel is done for show.
I just visited China and seeing it as 3rd lowest on the list makes sense. Everything is done by QR Code with AliPay or WeChat. Even the old man selling bamboo cane for less than a dollar takes it.
Some restaurants do not take cash, period - it adds a staff member. A few places like a massage parlour I even tried to offer cash instead, and they didn’t care which leads me to believe the fees are very low.
Of course, it is China so there’s no privacy.
> Does the government turn a blind eye to most of it?
Sort of. It's difficult to track private transactions on WeChat between friends to actual goods being sold. From what I've seen, most illegal goods/services sold just have you add them as a "friend" and send the agreed upon amount. Somewhat informal but neither side tends to scam since the consequences of escalating (e.g. getting a WeChat account banned) essentially makes it impossible to live. I've also seen Taobao being used where they place an overpriced real product that you buy and the margin is what you pay for the illegal good.
I'm not sure if it's truly turning a blind eye or whether the scale is just too large for the government to do anything about it.
Do you think most bigger drug dealers and prostitutes pay tax on their income?
I'd think it would be hard to have $100k+ flowing into your account with no explanation.
I've been curious what most countries will do for these situations as they go cashless. Non-KYC'd crypto seems like a natural solution, but I haven't seen it used much outside larger organizations.
Don't know how it works for large drug dealers but I would assume they use the same channels as money launderers: overseas accounts.
You get in contact with a connections guy and they give you a list of accounts to pay in yuan (usually business owners that makes profit overseas), they pay you in USD from their legitimate businesses for some made up invoice. Each transaction is under the limit for being scrutinized. Once money is out of the country, you can pay people off however you want.
Prostitutes would probably just take cash if close to limits.
You left the last sentence out of the paragraph from their ad copy. It doesn’t make their practices OK, but it’s important for those who don’t click through:
> We should note, however, that this data becomes aggregated, removing personally identifiable information before it is received by advertisers.
It's not that important though, because depersonalized and even aggregated data can be traced back to a individual and even if roku doesn't hand that information along with your account details to advertisers roku themselves still have it all linked and can sell/leak that info to anyone at any time.
Most of the apples in grocery stores have been in storage for months since most are harvested in fall and have been sprayed with diphenylamine (DPA), an antioxidant that slows the development of black patches on the skin. DPA is banned in the EU because a byproduct of it when it breaks down, nitrosamine, is a carcinogen.
I love apples, but since finding this out, I try to avoid eating them out of season.
Agree, ambrosia is my #1.
The fact that it is 55 and the mealier, less tart, less sweet Gala apples are 70 tells me we have very different tastes.
It is closer to a Honeycrisp, which they have as 91 and I grab when Ambrosias are unavailable.

Black Mirror Nose Dive anyone?
Nice concept but the "invest" idea introduces friction that could be too much to overcome.
What about a PageRank system based on recommendation / testimonials and likes and connections?
The starting share price is 1.00 for all members at the time of registration.
- When anyone BUYS shares in your profile, the price will increase by 0.01
- When anyone SELLS shares in your profile, the price will decrease by 0.01
Each trade is fixed at 100 shares
There are a few limits we placed for the launch:
[1] A maximum of 1,000 shares in another member per day
- So, if you wanted to BUY 5,000 shares, it would need to be spread across 5 different days
- The same logic applies if want to SELL shares
[2] A maximum of 100,000 shares total in another member
At launch, all trades are 100% liquid and you are free to BUY/SELL as many shares within the limits indicated. Each trade moves the price up/down 0.01. I do not consider that to be necessarily worthless however.
The share price and trades reflect actual member activity and sentiment. It's an indication of interest, that was not available before. Why would you buy shares of another members profile? Why would they buy shares of your profile?
Until today, you could follow or like. Now, you have the option to invest. However, you are free to not invest any of your "trust tokens" [superficial points]. You could, if you like, only use SELLFF to perform discovery and direct communication of other members who may choose to participate in trades.
We thought the trade feature would be an interesting experiment, to see how people would react if they "could" invest in each other, just like stocks. This is a first version and we will need to see how things develop.
I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Is exactly the feedback I was hoping for as we work to build this marketplace solution.
Yeah, the price goes up automatically when you buy. It's just like upvoting. They put a lot of work into making this fake interactive stock trading thing when it's really just imaginary internet points with no actual market dynamics.
That is an accurate comment. Your SELLFF profile can help you to connect with new business opportunities, from which you can save and/or earn $$. It's a new/different alternative to the megacorp solutions that does not track you or sell your personal information.
