The unfortunate part is that he became someone you’re happy to see out. I think he’s absolutely become a net negative for Wordpress, but that wasn’t always the case.

Exactly. I am very thankful for the experiences and community that WordPress has given me that I seriously consider that maybe Matt has been victim of a social engineering attack to make him be perceived as a little bit unstable... kind of like what happened with the xz backdoor attempt.

But, to be honest, I am not too well versed in the drama. IIRC it started because someone was building something on top of WP but was basically reselling something that was already free without contributing back? Maybe I'm mixing things up and I should really hit the sack.

Nevertheless, my concern lies mostly with the overall security of the platform, as I can imagine serious financial interests (and geological ones, too) might take the time to push out someone that knows the platform inside out.

Matt has made like hundreds of bizarre decisions over the last few years. The WPEngine drama is a big part of it, but he's also been odd with Automattic's purchase and handling of Tumblr and other topics.

Unfortunate this was the result of 23 years, not unfortunate it's happening.

I guess the issue isn't that his backups “failed”, but that Mullenweg allegedly deleted evidences and lost devices on purpose.

Except this isn't a “me” situation. I mean, I can (and did) stop using Meta platforms, but everyone around me is sticking to them, and sometimes I appear in a photo or something, not to mention the infamous shadow profiles that Meta keeps of people not in their databases.

That's what one does when its product and public perception is way behind competitors.

Yes, but you can federate selectively, as in choosing which other instances you want to. And, yes, federating turns you responsible for the content of the other instance (IMHO; not legal advice or even fact checked).

Just like in Justice, where every suspect always say they are to blame when they did commit a crime.

Don't get your hopes up. The industry is well underway in migrating everything possible away from native apps to Electron.

People for some reason forget that for most election apps you can run it in a browser tab and avoid almost all of the overhead.

You can run slack, teams, outlook, Spotify, figma, and just about everything else in a browser tab; you get Linux support for free and you are only running one browser instance.

I shift a 1 GB electron app to a 900 MB browser tab (i don't know what it actually is, but the number of Tabs I have taking up 1 GB memory is shocking these days).

Trying to vibe as many of my own CLI toolings as possible....

Doing that helps some, but it doesn’t help the fact that web engines and the balls of mud they’re so often tasked with running are quite heavy even with just one browser instance.

Pay a subscription for a Microslop Pro Max Windows $50/mo, then pay another $50 the NVidia Pro GPU add-on (the gaming version is slightly cheaper, but we can't let you use that since it's against the ToS), then another $50/mo for Adobe Premiere + $20 extra for the 4K export option. But you've already used up your monthly quota for it, so you pay another $50 for reset the limit. Then your machine doesn't have enough storage, I guess it's time to upgrade the cloud storage subscription too, that will be another $50 please.
