I think the idea is that, the current trajectory of technology is just making problems worse. More and more powerful, capable of pulling us further and further from a healthy equilibrium as we see with global warming etc.
Theoretically, if we can crack fusion or some other source of abundant, cheap energy, we could build many of the bandaid solutions proposed today that are not feasible due to energy constraints, while transitioning society to a more sustainable path. Tilt the curve as it were.
Our psyches unfortunately aren't built for the globalized world we live in, and unless we figure out some sort of collective awakening to transcend our egos... Our best hope is likely solutions that allow the march of progress, while slowing, stopping, and eventually undoing a bunch of damage humans have done to the biosphere over our history. Definitely a moon shot, but hopefully we can figure something out.

Analogy: the doorframe is of a standard width so that a wheelchair can get through. This means manufacturers can make equipment that will fit in your house without calling you first! You never have to worry you bought a new refrigerator that needs to be pulled into a hole in the roof because it won't fit through the door. You never have to worry about delivering food to a grocer because your hand truck and boxes will fit, and there is a ramp instead of oddly shaped stairs. Nobody needs to be in a wheelchair for this.
Within built environment and industrial design that's termed universal design.
The canonical example is ramps on footpaths providing equivalent benefit to people in wheelchairs, parents with strollers, and commuters on bikes, scooters or skateboards. The door width example you provide is another perfect case.
There are many aspects of things we design and build where a small focus of accessibility for one group brings benefits to many.
I never understand why I can get better results, with less thinking about it, than some of the Tier1 companies.. Modern diffusion models can easily render the image onto a white background, center it, crop it, relight it, but keep the same item, at no cost, or low cost.
The real amazon tax is getting people to think shipping fees are part of the item, and causing one $5 cable+shipping to be $10. Three $5 cables and shipping is $30. tbh if amazon went up in smoke like wildberries I would not even flinch.
