I was surprised by that too. I took apart a lot of electronics as a kid and distinctly remember it being mostly components with leads.

This is entirely true, and easily verified by checking subreddit user overlap. WSB overlaps heavily with a number of right-wing subreddits, and, naturally, /r/unemployment.

Right well Google is preternaturally good at that shit. I want to know Apple's excuse for failing to outperform Amazon.

Yeah fair enough. I'd be interested in knowing that myself.

Exactly. "The technology isn't there yet" and "I wouldn't be comfortable using voice control" are said from a place of privilege. There are people out there benefiting from it right now, despite some people's very first-world hangups about it.

I bet you have lots of friends.

Could you please not post uncivil or unsubstantive comments to Hacker News? It's against the spirit and rules of the site: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html.

I find my comment civil, substantive, and a worthwhile contribution to the discussion. Maybe you should talk to the guy I replied to.

But in only five years, he was able to go from knowing nothing about photography, to spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on it!

That's not entirely accurate. They observed that with a fully charged battery it performed as expected. The CPU wasn't throttled until the battery was depleted.

That's not my experience. Unless depleted means 95% charged and 87% capacity compared to original spec.

Mine runs at 50% CPU speed under those circumstances. I wouldn't call that "performing as expected."

It's absolute magic in person. The limited FOV is kind of a bummer, but tracking is rock solid.

I did the Mars demo at a conference a while back - the first couple of minutes I was underwhelmed, but at some point, my brain "bought-in" - I noticed this when I crouched down to look under a virtual rock outcropping without a second thought.

FYI the Mars demo is garbage. I suggest trying out Fragments for a better feel for the capabilities of the device.

The whole thing read like an only mildly more coherent version of the Series of Tubes speech.

And kept harping on about voice call quality. What.

Good summary. Basically the trick is to be rich, and spend ridiculous amounts of money with the right credit cards.

It even says in the article that his brother was killed when he was young, so his parents felt guilty and bankrolled him.

spend it right, using the proper channels. The larger lesson is... make your money work for you / earn you money while you sleep.
