Oh, the ray-tracing-as-reality rabbit hole goes a lot deeper than that. Google "potentially visible set" and suddenly quantum mechanics will make a lot more sense. (In a pass-the-bong kind of way, anyway.)

But certainly there was no reason for any serious historical thinkers to speculate along such lines.
