My partner is currently doing a Master's degree in social-policy and data science. There is a technological component which covers big-data, statistical analysis, and programming (R, Python, Java, etc). That technological aspect runs alongside a robust social policy program. How we can leverage big data & technology to do public good.
An example might be drafting and implementing evidence based policies to address the the impact of Technological Unemployment brought on by AI and Automation. How do we serve "coal country"? How can we successfully roll out a basic income program? Now that Microsoft has reached pairity with human translators what are we going to do about the redundant middle class jobs?
There seems to be a tremendous amount of interest in social policy and technology. Yesterday's "Zuckerberg Manifesto". YC's announcement about investing in social startups and their basic income research. Elon Musk talking about the potential for the unemployment rate to go to 50%, Matt Cutts recent announcement about joining the digital service and so on...
I'm wondering if anyone in the HN community has some ideas around how we might track down organizations interested in policy and technology? Does google, microsoft, facebook, open-ai, have "social policy departments"? Is there anyone at these organizations thinking about the social impact of their work?
I would love to hear some suggestions from the HN community. We're looking to find a few good contacts or suggestions around where we might look to find an summer-internship for a masters student in this area.
Thanks
