Deleted FB a few years ago, I haven't missed it for a second. I thought we reached peak FB about a year ago and was obviously wrong. I honestly don't understand why people can't communicate directly with each other given the insane amount of tools available and how cheap data, domains and services have become. There is absolutely an "us vs. them" going on between those who are on FB and those who have opted out. I'd love to get more people to opt out and this article is one of the better arguments out there. For those who want to try a true block of FB and all its works, try this... https://github.com/jmdugan/blocklists/blob/master/corporatio...
I really wish this weren't being reframed as an "opt out" discussion. The article is expressing valid concerns about the collective impact of FB. Opting out, even in large numbers, won't change the fact that the company has tremendous, unchecked influence on our lives.
I really believe if people left FB in significantly large numbers to something else with better practices, FB would be compelled to change. Even if they didn't change, at least you would not be a part of their bad privacy practices/manipulation/etc.
I too am not a user of Facebook, but I think for a different reason. It's interesting that you cited an "insane amount of tools available" as being an alternative to Facebook. Isn't Facebook one of those tools?
