There are many difficult things that are worthless in value.

You could be the greatest deep sea underwater basket weaver, that doesn't make your goods valuable. Nobody wants your damp baskets.

He's not saying that programming is easy: he's saying it has high value to difficulty, higher than other more difficult careers.
