HA isn't at fault, but does cause shit SD cards — which are the norm — to fail. I was unsure if it was a random failure or attributable to my use of the card. The parent comment cleared that up for me.

I mean, I'm not being pedantic about root cause. Like I've seen name brand cards fail while in read only mode. It has nothing to do with HA, and everything to do with the cards.
