Dunno, depending on your country they can be pretty easy to replace and they do tend to work quite well as collateral. This entirely depends on your situation, for example I don't think there are many places where it'd be a huge deal for a white westerner to lose their passport.

Are you sure you're not conflating IDs with passports?

Though, yeah, in Germany at least it's quite easy to replace passports
