They were proprietary; only worked in chrome. Progressive webapps are built out of open standards, and will ideally eventually work everywhere.

Guess what browser implements all stuff from http://web.dev and has the biggest coverage for WebAssembly?

Open standards are meaningless when only one cares about them.
