Best New York slang is saying, "lemme get a" when you order hot food at a bodega.

Relevant lesson from the best teachers you could have for New York slang[1];-) It's the Beastie Boys teaching their Japanese interviewer how to say: "Lemme have a slice of pizza.". It's a funny and entertaining interview despite the interviewer being a bit cringe-worthy. In my opinion the interview is also worth watching, because it's a good lesson for how you treat a dialog partner that is nervous and overwhelmed in a respectful way.

Thinking of music and NYC also Kenny Gioia comes to mind. After having watched tons of his Reaper instructional videos I think I dreamt in a thick New York accent;-)

The cringe you are experiencing is due to interviewer not really speaking english.

I honestly had no idea that wasn’t universal. Never thought twice about it.

Some people outside of NYC think it's rude the first time they hear it! No "please" or "may I" in sight.

In South Africa we will often say "hello" and "how are you?" before ordering, no exaggeration.

Sounds like UK - I've heard people use "you're alright mate?" Before just proceeding with the order as normal

I see/hear that a bit in some British panel shows that I enjoy; the host and sidekick will start with "You alright?" as a general intro phrase.

I like to think of it as the English version of the French 'ca va'.

"Alright?"

"Alright."

To be fair, the NYC version of that is “how ya doin’?”. You don’t wait for an answer though.

Who’s got time for all of that?

Hah, and here I thought I only stick out when I ask for cawfee.

I have been often mocked when asking for a cup outside of the metro area! I means how the f else wouldja say it?

same
