I've never missed a day during this time and have learned invaluable things from all of you specially the ones posting thoughtful comments. I'm a believer of "Success is the product of daily habits, not once-in-a-lifetime transformation" and all of you contributed to me getting a little better one day at a time. I'm pushing myself to write and comment more, so I can hopefully be able to return the favor with the things I know best.

For me HN is an excellent source of curated news, and not always technical. Half of the time my GF asks me "where did you read that?", the answer is HN :)

Ugadi (Kannada/Karnataka New Year) falls on April 13 2021 as per Panchang (traditional Hindu almanac followed in India).

BTW, using Panchang, a Vedic pundit in a village can accurately predict solar/lunar eclipse start/end times (among many other predictions) without any scientific instrument whatsoever.

2020 had its downs and it's ups for me, but I'm glad I belong to this community. I feel like it's the only sane place on the internet these days. Thank you dang and scotb for keeping it that way :)

HN makes me a tiny bit smarter at least once a week and I am very grateful to all of you for that.

Sometimes there are weeks when I read HN daily, sometimes there weeks I don't visit it. But somehow I get back to the site every now and then.

Never thought I'd live in a year that will be in the history books for a long time to come. So many lessons learned (most of them hard ones), spending three weeks in bed and many months in recovery was no fun at all. But much better than the alternative.

Now, something tells me that 2021 can't possibly be worse than 2020 was but I've learned to allow for a little bit of superstition here on account of previous sentiments like that. So let me just say that I hope that all of you will make it through the COVID crisis in one piece and healthy and that 2021 will bring you much good luck and good fortune.

EFF supported this initiative. It wasn’t “reform” at all; courts had already ruled mass telecom surveillance illegal under “general warrant” provisions of the constitution. The programs were being shut down. The FREEDOM act “fixed” this and reauthorized the program by requiring FISA warrants to target specific “persons”—but here’s the catch: “person” was defined as per the FISA Act, where “Verizon” and “AT&T” are “persons”. So this wasn’t reform, the net effect was the same, but now the government just needed a warrant for each telecom company rather than having authorization to just spy on all of them at once. Read the bill... I absolutely couldn’t believe anyone was calling this “reform”.
