It's been a few years since this was published, but I hope OP is still proud of the derivation even after the footnote discovery at the end.

One thing I don't understand is where the introduction of "triangles" comes in. Is that a standard approach from some area of geometry, or is it a characteristic of the applied field of rasterization?

Also, OP should have a included at least one joke :-)
