Stephen Jay Gould found it easy to get funding for "The Mismeasure of Man" because Harvard has always been plagued by rich kids who can't test their way out of a paper bag.

Standardized tests have always been a way that people from underprivileged backgrounds, such as

can prove their talent. To make Gould's cause look admirable as opposed to reprehensible they had to make it sound like it had something to do with race.
