I moved out of DBA work after many years working for large enterprises. Databases had become more of support model. There were very few new databases you were able to contribute to. Either it was an off the shelf package where the database structure, configuration and coding came from the vendor or platform as a service. As a contractor I went where there was more work and more money: security. There's always work reducing risk...
