The original author might want to check their claim that:

"Their exact origins are not completely clear, but watches have existed in some form or another since the early 19th century."

While I think this claim is true about "wrist watches" (1810), portable watches such as "pocket watches" and "pendant watches" have existed since at least the early 16th century.
