It's actually good to support marginalized people. While I don't identify as LGBTQ, I have experienced elitism and disrespect in IT jobs and communities and have certainly seen my share of racism and sexism.
A community that ensures kindness and compassion for marginalized members is built into their DNA will probably have that same kindness and compassion for everyone. Literally no downside to elevating LGBTQ members as far as I can tell.
