Eliot is my favorite writer alongside Tolstoy. She was the first person to translate Spinoza to English and her intellectual prowess is so enormous and evident it bleeds out of every page of Middlemarch. She is the only author I’ve encountered who successfully blended philosophy and literature.

A slight aside, I must say I am exhausted by the focus on her appearance in biographies of Eliot. They simply care too much about it
