Deluge of marketing emails got you down?

Last weekend I got fed up with all clicking the “unsubscribe” button on all the newsletters in my Gmail inbox, so I went looking for a way to automate it. I found some scammy apps like unroll-dot-me that sell your info and barely work. I also found a free Google Sheet script from 2017, but it crashed on the first message in my inbox. So, I rewrote it – and now it (seems to) work great!

I noticed non-promotional emails rarely have the text "unsubscribe" while most promotional emails do.

So I set up a filter to send all emails with the word "unsubscribe" to the Gmail promotions tab. This catches most emails, even the pesky ones where "unsubscribe" doesn't seem to work. And I only get mail notifications for non-promotional email.

These promotional emails also get tagged with "sub", so I can omit them from my searches (or search promotional emails exclusively.) I made a simple bookmarklet that toggles `-label:sub` in my search query.

You can apply the filter/"sub" tag to emails you previously received, so this really helps clean out your inbox!
