I think an interesting outlook on these situations is that if you believe someone has the right values (e.g. earning money and earning respect from peers) then greed towards those values is a nobel pursuit.
If society can't make greed go away then maybe it's better to celebrate human nature and contextualize/guide it into being pro-social.
