Indeed. Though I'm sure the gym's merchant account requires them to stop charging a particular credit card if you ask them. You can then switch to paying by cash, stop paying, default on the account, and then go through the whole collections thing.

The OP did learn a valuable lesson, though: don't enter into a contract you don't agree to, expecting to have someone else get you out of it.
