Found the article quite interesting. Generators producing DC voltage directly, and alternators - similar to brushless dc (BLDC) motors - actually are three phase AC electric motors that get rectified into DC for usage.

Hybrid and pure electric cars eschewing either option, and going with DC -> DC converters directly from the onboard pack.
