Programming is like building a house - except that no one talks about themselves as being a "house builder".
Flawed analogy. Programming is more like being a carpenter or an electrician or a landscaper.

That was my point - an individual practitioner is like any one of those roles I mentioned. The problem is that we are all lumped together under the nebulous term "programmer" - and that leads to unnecessary antagonism.
