All you need is to design your bean enclosure so it's never completely empty. The few beans trapped in what I'd call a "reminder reservoir" will be enough to remind users beans go here.

If you can do this and keep the beans segregated, this is far and away the best solution.
Even just gluing a coffee bean or two to the outside might work.

or rather than having real beans, have fake beans at the bottom. I'm assuming that at some point the real beans in the reservoir would go off
