An example of someone building and maintaining free binaries for a paid binary was Xchat-2 for windows. It seems officially they stopped charging for the windows binaries, but when they did, someone was maintaining free builds that ranked second to the Xchat page on google. Not that they were banking on people paying for windows builds though.
