		There are a lot of plugins for VIM, and I want to go down to the barebones to have a simple yet efficient setup. What does the HN community think are the absolutely essential plugins that one must have?

Of course, if you really want a barebones setup, just run vim without plugins. But that wasn't your question, so here are my favorite plugins…

Shougo/unite.vim, airblade/vim-gitgutter, mbbill/undotree, junegunn/goyo.vim, junegunn/vim-easy-align, gerw/vim-HiLinkTrace (handy for tweaking colorschemes)
