I think people tried this and called it Liberty Reserve and went to prison for 20 years.


From what I can tell they were laundering money, something harder to do with public transactions.

Operating a financial institution with permits, and identification of participants might not draw the ire of the US government.

With the transparency and lack of anonymity I would imagine the usefulness to criminals would be minimal.
